Tonight, December 31, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will ring in 2013 with a bang at the annual New Year's Eve fireworks spectacular at Grand Army Plaza. The free celebration, sponsored by BP Markowitz and held in partnership with the Prospect Park Alliance, starts at 11 p.m. with musical entertainment by Brooklyn's Rock ‘N' Soul Experience and free hot chocolate.

On Thursday, December 6, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will welcome everyone to the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. One lucky child from the audience will be chosen to flip the switch and illuminate the 40-foot-tall Christmas tree in Brooklyn Borough Hall Plaza-which Time Out New York has hailed as one of the City's trees "worth seeking out on a cold winter's night."

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz has released the following statement about Hurricane Sandy: 'By 7:00 this evening, all residents in Evacuation Zone A should have left their homes to stay with loved ones or at one of the city shelters that opened earlier this morning. This includes, but is not limited to, Brooklynites living in parts of Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach, Sheepshead Bay, Sunset Park, Red Hook, DUMBO, Williamsburg and Greenpoint. I strongly urge all residents in this zone to follow the evacuation order for their personal welfare as well as the safety of rescue personnel who will have to risk their own lives in the event of serious, life-threatening conditions.'

The Brooklyn Book Festival announced today that noted journalist, essayist and author Pete Hamill will receive the Festival's prestigious Best of Brooklyn, Inc.-The "BoBi"-Award, which is bestowed each year on an author who has had a broad impact on the field of literature and whose body of work exemplifies or speaks to the spirit of Brooklyn. Hamill will be celebrated at City Point in Downtown Brooklyn as part of the Brooklyn Book Festival Gala Mingle today, September 22. Hamill will then be featured at the main Festival on Sunday the 23rd, in conversation with Bill Goldstein (of WNBC-TV's Bill's Books), and joining former BoBi Award winners Edwidge Danticat and Paul Auster for readings moderated by Johnny Temple, chair of the Brooklyn Literary Council.
