On July 22, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will host 'Old School Night' at the 31st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Concert Series at Wingate Field in Crown Heights, with Rakim, Whodini, Big Daddy Kane and Chubb Rock.

Tonight, July 18, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will host Lynyrd Skynyrd at the 35th anniversary season of the Seaside Summer Concert Series at Coney Island.

Through a series of ambitious public photographic art installations, the enterprising Brooklyn-based cooperative United Photo Industries works to champion new directions in photography and cultivate ties within an ever-expanding, globe-trotting community of photographers. In partnership with Photo District News (PDN), Brooklyn Bridge Park, and Flash Forward Festival, United Photo Industries is pleased to announce the 2013 edition of one of its signature initiatives, THE FENCE, the 1,000 foot-long outdoor photographic installation whose inaugural edition drew over one million visitors during its 10-week run at Brooklyn Bridge Park last year.

On Tuesday, June 4, the office of Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined the Brooklyn Book Festival, members of the Brooklyn Literary Council and top authors, publishing industry leaders, editors and literary agents to publicly reveal the more than one hundred and forty national and international authors who have already agreed to participate in the eighth annual Brooklyn Book Festival and to welcome back AT&T as its major sponsor. The Festival will take place on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Borough Hall, and other venues including St. Francis College, Brooklyn Historical Society, St. Ann and the Holy Trinity Church and Columbus Park. On Tuesday, June 4, the office of Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will join members of the Brooklyn Literary Council and AT&T to publicly announce the more than one hundred and thirty national and international authors who have already agreed to participate in the 2013 Brooklyn Book Festival.

Beginning on Monday, June 3, and continuing through Saturday, June 8, Brooklyn Pride, in conjunction with Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, will celebrate the weeklong observance of LGBT pride in the borough, home to one of the city's-and nation's-largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.

On June 3rd at Midnight, the 27-day $100,000 Kickstarter campaign to save Coney Island's Mermaid Parade will come to a close. On the morning of May 30th, the initial goal was met through small contributions from people around the world. Widespread attention from media, celebrities (Alec Baldwin, Darren Aronofsky, etc.), and, well, everybody has created a veritable flash flood of support for the 30 year old event.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and New York City Parks Commissioner Veronica M. White today opened all 14 miles of New York City's beaches for the 2013 season.

On Friday, May 3, Brooklyn Parks Commissioner Kevin Jeffrey joined Borough President Marty Markowitz; Council Member Stephen Levin; Member of the Beastie Boys, Adam Horovitz; parents of Adam Yauch, Noel and Frances Yauch, and members of the Yauch family; and John Silva of Silva Artist Management, to rename Palmetto Playground in Brooklyn Heights in honor of musician and Brooklyn native, Adam Yauch.

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce has announced that it has reached 1,200 members with the addition of Coney Island USA. In existence since 1980, Coney Island USA is responsible for bringing a number of great events to the famous Brooklyn neighborhood, including the annual Mermaid Parade along Surf Avenue.

MTV , a unit of Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAB, VIA), is set to make history by bringing the 2013 “Video Music Awards” to Brooklyn, New York for the first time ever. Airing LIVE from Barclays Center on Sunday, August 25, this year's “Video Music Awards” will mark the 30th anniversary of the show and become the first major annual award show to take place in the borough of Brooklyn.

On Thursday, February 14, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and wife Jamie joined hundreds of Brooklyn sweethearts who have been married to one another for 50 years or more, including Kings County District Attorney Charles 'Joe' Hynes and bride Patricia, who will celebrate a half century of wedded bliss this October. New York City's five borough Chambers of Commerce and TD announced the specific neighborhoods and commercial corridors across the city in most need of revitalization -- including areas affected by Hurricane Sandy -- and how TD's $200,000 grant to the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce will assist businesses with strategies to recover and rebuild.

Brooklyn-based Super Wings NY is set to be featured on Bobby Dean's Not My Mama's Meals on the Cooking Channel, Wednesday, January 16th, at 9:00 pm EDT. In the episode, Super Wing's CEO Colette Cyrus-Burnett whips up a batch of her world famous Bajan Merry Mango wing sauce. Bobby, the son of Paula Deen, and Colette work side-by-side simmering traditional Caribbean ingredients, including mango, to create the delicious sauce.
