Museum of the Moving Image is pleased to announce the lineup for the First Look Festival, its annual showcase for groundbreaking new moving-image art.

In its annual Curators'Choice series, a selection of some of the best and most adventurous films released in the past year, Museum of the Moving Image will present ten titles, from December 30, 2016 through January 8, 2017.

Museum of the Moving Image is pleased to announce the lineup for the First Look Festival, its annual showcase for groundbreaking new moving-image art.

During the next five months, Museum of the Moving Image will present a comprehensive retrospective devoted to the films of Martin Scorsese, in conjunction with a major exhibition about the director's work, life, and passion for cinema.

With a wide selection of great movies by directors including Ingmar Bergman, Joe Dante, John Huston, Stanley Kubrick, Vincente Minnelli, and more, Museum of the Moving Image presents a holiday edition of its popular ongoing series See It Big!, from November 19 through December 24, 2016. The season opens this Today with back-to-back screenings of Tim Burton and Henry Selick's The Nightmare Before Christmas, screening in Dolby Digital 3-D; Barry Levinson's heartfelt, autobiographical Avalon, chronicling generations of a Jewish family in Baltimore; and Hannah and Her Sisters, Woody Allen's funny yet philosophical family dramedy starring Mia Farrow, Barbara Hershey, Dianne Wiest, and Michael Caine-with the last two films centered around Thanksgiving meals.

Museum of the Moving Image will present a seven-film retrospective that will include all of Borderline's feature films, with the New York premiere of The Eyes of My Mother with director Nicholas Pesce in person and a special screening of Christine with star Rebecca Hall in person, now through November 27, 2016. The New York-based independent film production company Borderline Films was founded in 2003 by NYU Tisch graduates Antonio Campos, Sean Durkin, and Josh Mond.

To honor his legacy, Museum of the Moving Image will present The Master: Philip Seymour Hoffman from September 16 through October 2, a retrospective featuring sixteen films, including his directorial debut Jack Goes Boating; Capote, for which he won an Academy Award for Leading Actor; and The Master, Magnolia, and Boogie Nights- three films he made with Paul Thomas Anderson.

Greece's most prominent film director of the post-1968 era, Theo Angelopoulos (1935–2012) was a master cinema stylist. His investigations into history and politics, tyranny and resistance, and spiritual anomie and emotional devastation place him on equal footing with filmmakers like Andrei Tarkovsky, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Wim Wenders. Today, at a time when Greece has struggled with impending economic collapse, and as the country's refugee crisis has worsened, with displaced populations fleeing war in the Middle East and massing on its borders, the themes of Angelopoulos's cinema are pressing once again. Museum of the Moving Image will present Eternity and History: The Cinema of Theo Angelopoulos, a complete retrospective of the director's career—the first in the United States in 25 years—from July 8 through 24, 2016. The retrospective will also be presented at the Harvard Film Archive in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from July 15 through August 22. The presentation of the retrospective at Museum of the Moving Image was made possible with support from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Hellenic American Chamber of Commerce.

Museum of the Moving Image is pleased to announce the final installment of films for The Hollywood Classics behind WALKERS, a series featuring special screenings and appearances by acclaimed directors and other special guests presented in conjunction with the exhibition Walkers: Hollywood Afterlives in Art and Artifact, the Museum's first major contemporary art survey.
