HANSEL AND GRETEL Takes Tepid Weekend Box Office with $19M

The gorey fairytale spin, HANSEL AND GRETEL, with Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, however, took the weekend top-spot with $19M. Paramount and MGM had originally hoped for $25 million. MAMA, starring Jessica Chastain and produced by Guillermo Del Toro, took the second spot with an additional $12.8 million, bumping its total up to $48.6M. The horror film came in first last weekend. SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, riding on the back of its Oscar buzz, came in third with $10M, raising its domestic total to $69M. Another Academy Award contender, ZERO DARK THIRTY, came in fourth with $9.8M. Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez's new film, PARKER, absolutely undershot projections. It took in $7 million and rounded out the top five. FilmDistrict adjusted their prediction for the film on Saturday morning from $10 million to $6m, after PARKER grossed just $2.1 million on Friday night. Finally, the critically-panned ensemble MOVIE 43 - the latest eye-rolling endeavor from Peter Farrelly - grossed $5 million, taking the seventh place on the weekend box office board.
