Back to the Articleby David Clarke
There is no denying that 2012 was a great year for theatre in Houston. Excellent productions were housed all over the city. And with the way things are shaping up, it appears that 2013 will be another fabulous year for theatre in the city. As I glance at the calendar for 2013, I find that there are many productions that I am already looking forward to. Utilizing the greatest restraint I could muster and considerable effort, I offer to you my top 5 most anticipated shows of 2013 in the order that they open...
Houston Grand Opera's production of SHOW BOAT (January 18 to February 9, 2013)-This piece of American musical theatre is extremely important in the development of the genre. Premiering in 1927, it was the first musical to join together spectacle with the serious. It was not entertainment for entertainment's sake. It did away with the light frivolities of the trivial and unrealistic operettas, light musical comedies, and follies type shows that came before it. Ahead of its time, SHOW BOAT laid the groundwork for the "book musical," which later came into its own as an art form with the 1943 premiere of OKLAHOMA.
Honorable Mentions go to Bayou City Theatrics entire season that kicks off 2013 with INTO THE WOODS (January 11 to January 20, 2013), Black Lab Theatre's production of THE SUBMISSION (January 11 to January 27, 2013), Stark Naked Theatre Company's production of GOD OF CARNAGE (February 21 to March 9, 2013), The Alley Theatre's production of A FEW GOOD MEN (March 1 to March 24, 2013), Main Street Theater's production of HENRY V (March 21 to April 21, 2013), Classical Theatre Company's SHYLOCK: THE JEW OF VENICE (March 27 to April 14, 2013), Music Box Musicals' production of THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE (April 11 to April 28, 2012), The Alley Theatre's production of THE ELEPHANT MAN (April 12 to May 5, 2013), Mildred's Umbrella Theatre Company's production of RAVENSCROFT (May 2 to May 18, 2013), Black Lab Theater's production of CH'ING·LISH (May 9 to May 26, 2013), Country Playhouse's production of SIX DEGREES OF SEPERATION (May 10 to May 25, 2013), Unity Theatre's production of I HATE HAMLET (May 16 to June 2, 2013), A.D. Player's production of MALCOM AND TERESA (May 22 to June 23, 2013), Theatre Southwest's production of Steven Dietz's DRACULA (May 31 to June 22, 2013), and Stage Door, Inc.'s production of SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET (July 5 to July 28, 2013). In all honesty, especially considering the insurmountable amount of competition (i.e. television, iPads, etc.) these days, any time a theater can open its doors to the public for a performance, I'm honestly pretty excited. So, I impolre you to do your part and support the Houston Arts Scene by checking out these shows and the many others that'll be playing around town in 2013. Even if none of these titles appeal to you, I am fairly certain that any of the others shows playing around the city in 2013 will. The Houston Theatre Scene certainly excells in having a little something for everyone. |
