Worldwide Pants, Rob Burnett and his and partner Jon Beckerman's B&B Productions, a subsidiary of Worldwide Pants, have secured the feature film rights to Jonathan Evison's novel THE REVISED FUNDAMENTALS OF CAREGIVING it was announced today. Burnett will adapt the novel for the screen and plans to direct the film as a follow up to his recently released feature film debut, We Made This Movie (currently available on various digital platforms, including iTunes).
Evison is also the author of The New York Times bestseller "West of Here."
"The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving" tells the story of Benjamin Benjamin, a man who has lost virtually everything - his wife, his family, his home, his livelihood. With few options, Ben enrolls in a night class called The Fundamentals of Caregiving taught in the basement of a local church. There Ben is instructed in the art of inserting catheters and avoiding liability, about professionalism, and how to keep physical and emotional distance between client and provider. Assigned to care for a teen patient, Ben realizes his training has done little to prepare him for the realities of caregiving. Ultimately, the two embark upon a wild road trip across the American West and a new camaraderie replaces the traditional boundary between patient and caregiver. Bursting with energy, this big-hearted, soulful, and inspired novel ponders life's terrible surprises and the heart's uncanny capacity to mend and become whole again.
"When I read Jonathan's novel I was thoroughly impressed by his careful and skillful handling of such delicate material," said Burnett. "In lesser hands the book would have been maudlin, but Jonathan miraculously infuses a heartbreaking story with inspiration, hope and even comedy. I am honored and flattered that he trusts me to bring his work to the screen."
The film rights were negotiated by CAA for Burnett/B&B Productions with CAA and Foundry Literary & Media on behalf of Evison.
