Photo Flash: First Images of LES MISERABLES Set

Related: LES MISERABLES, LES MISERABLES movie, set, Tom Hooper, Hugh Jackman, musical adaptation

The set of the film adaptation of LES MISERABLES has been open to the public since cameras began rolling in Greenwich, UK last week. And with such a generous offer, plenty of fans have taken advantage and flocked to the set, erected outside of the Old Royal Naval College. BroadwayWorld has scoured the internet to find a handful of the most enticing shots of the epic musical's set and crew, and compiled them here.

Nearly all of the film's stars have been spotted on location in Greenwich by fans, according to various Twitter accounts. Some have even been lucky enough to hear the cast rehearse and shoot the show's iconic number, "Do You Hear the People Sing?". It's rumored that shots below are part of that song, and the events surrounding it, including General LaMarque's funeral.

The first and last photos depict what appears to be the model of carriages the film is primarily using, as seen in other pictures. It also shows a group of extras, outside the ORNC, the primary set for the Greenwich shoot.

The second features members of the French Army being instructed by a producer - this photo, along with others on the internet, are said to be linked to General LaMarque's funeral. It was originally believed that perhaps the barricade would be built on location here, but as the attack on the revolutionaries' barricade is said to occur at the convergence of three streets, many are attributing their presence to the general's funeral.

Photo three shows a female extra in complete costume and her horse, in the middle of an alley.

The fourth and fifth photos shows that Hooper isn't limiting himself to the stage material: the grandiose elephant on the Place de la Bastille was originally an architectural feat ordered by Napoleon himself. It was never finished, and in the LES MISERABLE novel, author Victor Hugo takes the liberty of calling it Gavroche's home.

LES MISERABLES originally opened in London at the Barbican Theatre on 8 October 1985, transferred to the Palace Theatre on 4 December 1985 and moved to its current home at the Queen's Theatre on 3 April 2004. When LES MISÉRABLES celebrated its 21st London birthday on 8 October 2006, it became the World's Longest Running Musical, surpassing the record previously held by "Cats" in London's West End. In January 2010, the West End production broke another record by celebrating its historic 10,000th performance.

The film, under the direction of Tom Hooper, intends to feature all of its stars singing live on film. The cast includes, as previously reported, Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as Javert, Sacha Baron Cohen as Thenardier, Eddie Redmayne as Marius, Aaron Tveit as Enjolras, Amanda Seyfried as Cosette, Anne Hathaway as Fantine, Samantha Barks as Eponine, and Helena Bonham Carter as Madame Thenardier.
