The UK Daily Star reported yesterday that Oscar winning actor and comedian Robin Williams had been approached to play the role of 'Britain's Got Talent' singing sensation, Susan Boyle.
Today, in various news outlets, Williams' rep has come forward to deny it, saying the reporting wasn't accurate. Williams will not appear as Boyle in any film biography.
Williams starred in Mrs Doubtfire, a comedy in which he portrayed a divorced dad who dresses up as a Scottish nanny and babysitter in order to spend more time with his children.
"Cross-dressing" or "gender-bending" roles are not common, but usually prove successful with audiences. Felicity Huffman won kudos for her portrayal of a transexual in the 2005 comedy Transamerica, John Travolta took the role made famous by Divine and Harvey Fierstein in the 2007 musical remake of John Waters's 1988 comedy Hairspray, and Dustin Hoffman was nominated for an Oscar in 1983 for Tootsie, in which he played an unemployed actor who disguises himself as a woman to get a role on a popular soap opera.
Famed actor Johnny Depp recently revealed his dream role was Broadway legend Carol Channing.
Susan Boyle became a worldwide overnight singing sensation after appearing on the Britain's Got Talent television show. Susan Boyle wowed the judges with her performance in the auditions for last season of Britains Got Talent, singing "I Dreamed A Dream" from Les Miserables.
Boyle, who's "nearly 48," talked about her cat, and joked around with the judges, noting that she had "never been kissed." The entire audience prepared for the worst as she began her song, but, once she starting singing the crowd and judges were transported by her emotional and theatrical take on the number!
Robin Williams will resume his 'Weapons of Self-Destruction' tour in Bloomington, Ind., on Sept. 30. The tour was postponed after Williams underwent a three-and-a-half-hour procedure at the Cleveland Clinic in March to replace his aortic valve, repair his mitral valve and correct his irregular heartbeat.
The solo comic show was to have played the Neil Simon Theater on Broadway in April and May; no alternate dates for those performances have been announced the Times reports.
Diane Rosen said in a news release a few months ago that Williams needed an aortic valve replacement. The 57-year-old Williams says he is "touched by everyone's support and well wishes."
The comedian and actor had canceled four shows in Florida after experiencing shortness of breath.
Williams, 57, had been touring "Weapons of Self Destruction" since September 2008.
