The big-screen adaptation of sweeping, epic musical LES MISERABLES was released in its first international markets this weekend: Japan and Korea. According to Deadline, Tom Hooper's film, starring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, has outperformed Peter Jackson's newly-released THE HOBBIT.
In Japan, LES MISERABLES took the number two spot in at the box office with $1 million at only 348 theaters. It was beaten by a local animated feature. THE HOBBIT took third, which was released last week, and SKYFALL placed fourth, having opened three weeks ago. LES MISERABLES has opened on par with MAMMIA MIA! in Japan, which went on to gross $465 million internationally.
In Korea, LES MISERABLES is also out-grossing THE HOBBIT, which is now 'paid previews' this weekend.
LES MIZ will open in North America, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Spain on Christmas Day, Australia on Boxing Day, and Hungary on December 27th. The film will be released to all other international markets on Jan. 11.
