JACK THE GIANT SLAYER topped this weekend's tepid box office, climbing to a ho-hum $28 million.
Bryan Singer's 3D action adventure, starring Nicholas Hoult, Eleanor Tomlinson, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, Bill Nighy and Ewan McGregor, reportedly had a budget of just over $200 million. Its weekend victory was undoubtedly a small one.
Jack the Giant Slayer tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for The First Time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them.
IDENTITY THIEF, starring Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman, continues to be a box office powerhouse, taking in another $9.7 million, bumping its three week total to just north of $107 million. It took the no. 2 spot this weekend.
In third was Relativity Media's new release 21 AND OVER, written by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, came in third with $9 million. 21 AND OVER follows straight-A college student Jeff Chang who has always done what's expected of him. But when his two best friends Casey and Miller surprise him with a visit for his 21st birthday, he decides to do the unexpected for a change, even though his critical medical school interview is early the next morning. It stars Miles Teller, Justin Chon, Skylar Astin and Sarah Wright.
THE LAST EXORCISM PART II, during its debut weekend, managed to scare up a measily $8 million, taking the fourth spot. Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's latest action flick, SNITCH, grossed an additional $7.7 million, bumping its two-week total to $24.4 million.
