Helena Bonham Carter to Play 'Fairy Godmother' in Kenneth Branagh's CINDERELLA

Helena Bonham Carter is continuing her quirky character streak.

Just off of playing Madame Thenardier in Tom Hooper's big screen adaptation of LES MISERABLES, the actress has officially signed on to play the fairy godmother in Kenneth Branagh's upcoming live-action CINDERELLA, it was announced today.

Bonham Carter will star opposite DOWNTON ABBEY's Lily James in the title, with Cate Blanchett as the iconic evil stepmother, and GAME OF THRONES' Richard Madden as the prince. THR also notes that James' costar Sophie McShera and Holliday Granger will take on hte role of Cinderella's step-sisters.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bonham will be filling a larger role than in previous interpretations. The godmother will be "disguised as an old beggar who watches over Cinderella before revealing herself as the magical being she truly is."

Bonham Carter is known for her roles in films such as A Room with a View, Fight Club, and playing the villainess Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter series. She frequently works with director and domestic partner Tim Burton in films such as Planet of the Apes, Big Fish, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Alice in Wonderland, and Dark Shadows. In 2012 she played Miss Havisham in Great Expectations, and Madame Thénardier in LES MISERABLES.

A two-time Academy Award nominee for her performances in The Wings of the Dove and The King's Speech, Bonham Carter's acting has been further recognised with six Golden Globe nominations, an International Emmy Award, a BAFTA Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
