
According to EW.com, Sony Pictures has confirmed that it is continuing with develoment of a sequel to 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo', entitled 'The Girl Who Played with Fire', despite disappointing box office returns from the first installment of the series.
Since it's release in US theaters on December 20th, 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' has grossed approximately $60 million at the box office, far below the film's expectated earnings. A spokesperson for Sony recently told Entertainment Weekly, "[Dragon Tattoo] continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book."
The source confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that development on the sequel is currently underway with writer Steven Zaillian working on a script for the second installment of the trilogy by author Stieg Larsson.
'The Girl with the Dragaon Tattoo' is a suspence thriller, written by Steven Zaillian, Stieg Larsson and directed by David Fincher. It stars Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgård, Christopher Plummer, Joely Richardson, Goran Visnjic, Julian Sands, Steven Berkoff, Yorick van Wageningen, Geraldine James, Arly Jover, Donald Sumpter, David Dencik, Moa Garpendal, Bengt C.W. Carlsson, Mathilda von Essen and Cate Montgomery.
Based on the first novel in the best-selling Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson, the film tells the story of a middle-aged hard-nosed investigative reporter in Stockholm who loses a libel case and faces jail time. He's offered an assignment to investigate the 40-year-old disappearance of a industrialist's niece on a remote island. His work alongside misunderstood rebellious female hacker Lisbeth Salander uncovers religious killings, Nazism, incest, child abuse and murder.
The second installment of the series, 'The Girl Who Played with Fire' is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2013.
