CINE to Launch Film Scoring Competition

CINE to Launch Film Scoring Competition

CINE, the film and television non-profit renowned for its Golden Eagle Awards, will launch the CINE Film Scoring Competition on December 10. Entering composers will each score the same short CINE Golden Eagle-winning film, from which the existing score is removed.

“Since 1957, CINE has helped open doors for emerging filmmakers and provided valuable peer recognition to those already established” said CINE President Mathew Tombers. “Because music is such a vital element of film, we want to provide a similar opportunity to film composers, and we’ve designed the scoring competition to do just that.”

Guest judges at the finalist stage will be film composer Michael Brook, who scored The Fighter, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and An Inconvenient Truth, among others, Michael A. Simpson, President & CEO of Informant Media, which produced Crazy Heart and Hysteria, and Brendan Canty of Trixie Films, who was the drummer for the famed punk band Fugazi.

CINE Board Member John Simson, who will chair the CINE Film Scoring Committee said, “Each of these judges brings a unique and accomplished perspective to the proceedings, they provide a great mix and their participation will make the competition and the recognition it bestows especially important to emerging composers.”

10-15 semi-finalists will be chosen from the entrants by CINE’s first stage judges. Second Stage judges including Daniel Carlin, Chair of Film Scoring at USC’s Thornton School of Music, and George S. Clinton, who chairs The Berklee College of Music’s Film Scoring Department, will select the 5 finalists.

All judging will be anonymous, with the identity and affiliation, if any, of entrants unknown to the judges. CINE’s Film Scoring Competition is open to student and emerging professional composers. Entrants may only submit if they are enrolled in a school program and/or have received less than $10,000 in combined creative/production/package fees in the two years preceding the competition.

Registration will be open from December 10-January 14, with registered entrants being granted access to the film to be scored on January 15. The deadline for uploading the scored film will be February 25, 2013.
